"Rose clasped her hands tight round her knees. How passionately she longed to be important to somebody again--not important on platforms, not important as an asset in an organization, but privately important, just to one other person, quite privately, nobody else to know or notice. It didn't seem much to ask in a world so crowded with people, just to have one of them, only one out of all the millions, to oneself. Somebody who needed one, who thought of one, who was eager to come to
one--oh how dreadfully one wanted to be precious!"
Elizabeth von Armin in The Enchanted April
I'll admit it. I cried when I read this in The Enchanted April. I had already seen the lovely, lovely movie but the book helped me to understand Rose better. Isn't there this part of Rose in almost everyone? There is in me. Is there in you?

I LOVED that movie!!!! must read the book now. I'm so happy to have found your blog, Dewena.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favourite books, Dewena. I didn't know there was a movie. Does it live up to the book? I tend to avoid watching films of books I love in case they disappoint.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that you and several of your readers have entered my draw (or drawing as you say - that means a picture to us!).
Maureen
To answer Maureen's question here: I saw the movie first and it is gorgeous with most of the main characters cast beautifully. The book is slightly different. I read it every year on some cold rainy March day when I long for April. The book is short, wish it were longer! I think they both make the other better. Google the movie cast, Maureen and you'll see some of your favorite actors in it probably!
DeleteSo funny about the draw/drawing difference! I think I was so nervous trying to "link" for my 2nd time that I hardly knew what I was typing!
It's a very romantic movie, one I think that couples would like to watch together. Like a second honeymoon!
Oh, I can't wait to see the movie.. I think the book would take long to read.. Loved the post.. wonder if it is out on Netflix? xoxo Marissa.
ReplyDeleteI am constantly surrounded by children right now (who always offer their love), but I bet when they're all grown and moved out I'll feel this one. I haven't heard of this movie or book. I'll be keeping my ears/eyes open for it.
ReplyDeleteDewena, I adore Enchanted April, the movie, and as much as I read I have yet to read the book. I must fix that soon. I think we all want what Rose wants-to be loved, to matter to someone. I waited and waited for the movie to become available on DVD and when it did I paid a lot for it but I watch it off and on. xo, olive
ReplyDeleteEnchanted April. What a dream of a movie...I've viewed it several times but never read the book. I should. And will. Off to the library.
ReplyDeleteDewena, I think I must read too fast. Although a sentence or a thought in a book will stay with me, I'd never be able to go back and find where it was in the book. I love the way you post these quotations and make me want to read each and every book from which they were quoted. This is such a sad piece, and since I've never read the book or seen the movie, I now want to read it. Great photo to go with it. laurie
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the movie or the book, but I like the title! I wonder if my mom has heard of it, I will have to ask her!
ReplyDeleteI like your old picture, old black and white pictures are fun! I love looking at the clothes people were wearing or how they're wearing their hair and what their homes were decorated like! Fun!
What beautiful writing-such a basic human desire.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post! Now I'm on the lookout for both the book and movie! Sweet picture of the lady and the cats!
ReplyDeleteJust looked up the movie and I've seen it! What a precious sweet movie! I will definitely read the book now.
DeleteAs soon as I saw Enchanted April I knew it would be one I'd like to see over and over. Don't all of us dream about getting away to a lovely place with gracious people?
ReplyDeleteYou've made me want to check out this book/ movie! Thanks so much for coming by my cozy kitchen today and for the very kind little note you left me! I hope you love the brownies as much as we do!! (I'm sure you will;) Please come back soon... I always appreciate your thoughtfulness!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Leslie
