"The Hurrying Wind"

Now we have what Hal Borland calls "the hurrying wind." At night I wake and hear it and it sounds as if black stallions were galloping above the roof of the farmhouse.
Gladys Taber from The Book of Stillmeadow

I love the winds of March, as long as no tornado watches come with them.

Weather, all kinds of it, are fairly magnificent, don't you think?

Punishment to me would be living somewhere that sees every day the same, day after day. Although, I suppose some would call that paradise.

When I wake up every morning and raise my bedroom shades I look over to our neighbor's yard where his flagpole is. If Old Glory is whipping about in the wind, I take it as an auspicious sign.

But if the flag were blowing about every day I would soon take it for granted.

I fall into a rut too easily. I even enjoy a rut too much, I think. And that's not a bad thing most of the time.

But I recognize that it can also become a trap. Sometimes I need life to shake me up a little, prod me out of my rut, make me examine my priorities.

Hurry me along like the March wind.

  1. Well, we definitely experience all four seasons here in Illinois and each one to extremes! February and March are my least-liked months. By Feb, we are climbing the walls here from being cooped up for many months of winter. March always comes in like a lion - we just never know what kind of weather we're going to get the entire month. Could be tons of rain, snow, freezing cold, or even warm weather. Today was in the 50's but rainy. Tomorrow will be in the 60's (first time since last October!) but very high winds - 55 mph! And rainy, too. Then dropping back down into the 30's. Our back yard was covered in ice and snow and now from the rain and warmer temps, it looks like a swimming pool.

I always say I'd love to live somewhere warm - like California - but I have a feeling you're right: I'd get tired of the same kind of weather quickly.

    1. Hi Melanie, I'm hoping you get some better weather there soon so you can be outside in your pretty garden. I know you must be looking forward to working in it again.

  2. beautiful writing! and you're right.
it's part of why I could never live somewhere that never changes!
here it seems to change every 15 minutes! LOLOL.
it has been incredibly windy today and continuing through tonight. we at least had rain last night. I woke during a clap of thunder and decided to just lie there and listen to the rain. it's a real treat. I have always loved STORMS!

  3. I love how the was so poetically written, Dewena. Spring is a bit of a mystery in that we never really know what we will wake up to. The only time inclement weather bothers me is if I have outdoor plans that are ruined by rain, snow or cold. Other times I welcome a rainy or snowy day to stay cozy inside.

Hope you've had a good week.

    1. Hi Jane, thank you and I agree. Nothing better than a cozy rainy or snowy day inside--unless we had important plans to be outside!

  4. You write so nice - .. for me I can't wait until the wind stops -I'm an outdoor love to walk and hike person and in the mountains in spring it is still too cold to do that if there is a wind chill ...I get feeling house bound. and then Iactually do love extreme weather for a few days on and off. I'm not even sure why I moved to the mountains, lol

    1. Hi Sandy, I can understand why you feel that way, as much as you enjoy being outside and taking pictures of the beautiful neighborhoods and scenery that you do. But I envy you living in the mountains!

    2. and I envy you NOT living in the mountains, lol. I do like it especially as the weather has warmed up and I've had some great walks over the past week.

    3. Isn't that funny, Sandy? But you see, the Blue Ridge Mountains are such a part of my childhood that I feel like they're my soul place here on earth. But for year round living I think Nashville is perfect with the right balance of weather. And we live in the middle of a basin with tall ridges all around, something that is very important to me.

Wish I could see your mountains though!

  5. Sorry, I'm behind on my visits! The wind whips noisily here in Texas...just about all the time. We are seldom without wind. Sometimes it is soft...sometimes it is all I can go do stand up against it. But, that's weather in TX. Like you, I couldn't stand to have the same weather day in and day out...stagnant weather...never changing. I love when storms blow through...no tornadoes...just storms...the sound is electrifying and calming at the same time...a cleansing of sorts! Love and hugs!

  6. Ah, the wind, with all its whispering waves of change...it seems to fly us into different life situations, doesn't it, with its gentle push into the unknown?

I miss the strong, cool, mountain winds that jetted by my house in the Cretan countryside, especially in the spring, when their force seemed to propel me more quickly into the season's rejuvenation of God's gifts.

I imagine you today peering out into your pretty garden, past the newly pruned hollies and pondering your new priorities, while a soft breeze places you in the nearby future.

    Happy Thursday,
    Poppy

    1. So beautifully expressed, Poppy. And how you must miss that Cretan countryside! But I know that wherever you reside will become the most welcoming home, to yourself and to your guests. That just comes naturally to you, an ultimate homemaker. And change can be so exciting!

  7. We had an exceptionally windy March here in Missouri this year. Not just regular wind, but extended gusts at 50 to 55 and a few times 60 mph. These winds came at least two different times for two days at a time. And other days just 25 30 mph winds all day and night long. The 50 - 60 mph gusts were worrisome and made it feel like the shutters or parts of the house might get blown off. One very early morning just before dawn, there was one very indignant robin who would call out very angrily and loudly after every strong gust. It sounded like he was fussing about those wind gusts. I very much enjoy normal early spring winds, but these hard gusts were very different.
