Our Three-Year Anniversary at Home Hill

Three years ago today RH and I pulled up the driveway of our new home with Otis and Milo for the first time.

I could fall down a never-ending rabbit hole with that one sentence but won't.

Instead just let me tell you that I love this little house with a passion. And this morning I am especially thankful that I am able to wash dishes at the big window over my kitchen sink.

I'm burning a candle from the Sweet Tea Candle Co. of Tennessee called Mistletoe, and listening to Pink Martini's old Christmas album called Joy to the World.

Yes, I know it is January but Christmas is still present in our house and in January I listen to every single Christmas album once more before packing them away until November 1st comes again.

My kitchen window faces South and with leaves gone from the big trees now today's brilliantly bright sunshine pours in the window.

I love this window with the same passion that I love all of Home Hill. I wish I loved washing dishes as much.

I envy those of you who actually love washing dishes. You even become poetic talking about it. You know who you are.

But this morning even I want to burst out in lyrics and sing my heart out, now that my dishes are done.

I'm so thankful to God for these three years at this dear little house and for all those family members who made it possible.

  1. I don't like washing dishes, but I really enjoy doing laundry. I don't know why. It's almost a zen thing with me.

    1. I like folding clean laundry, Briana. And making my bed and even polishing furniture--although you wouldn't think it to look at mine now!

  3. Having a window over the sink makes all the difference when washing dishes. I enjoy mine as well. And I'm one of those people who enjoys washing dishes. Happy Anniversary to you and Home Hill!

  5. Wow, it seems like you just moved there. I am really trying to get into the 'joy' of dishwashing. I've never had a dishwasher. My dear husband did help on occasion and that was sweet of him. It is much nicer now that I have a window with a view over the sink. I have also found that if I don't procrastinate, washing the dishes right away makes a big difference. Waking up to a clean kitchen is wonderful!!!

    1. Yes, waking up to a clean kitchen is the best! And yet it's those after supper dishes, when it's dark that I least like to do. Most of my things go in the dishwasher but there's always a big pot or some of my vintage china that must be hand washed that I often save for morning sunshine to finish up. Bad, I know!

  6. I think you're making the most of a chore you don't like....I do the same. I have music I love playing when I'm cleaning up after dinner....usually either Chet Baker or 1040's Housewife Music on Pandora....there are always candles burning, and my soap is always highly scented and appropriate for the season...currenly Mrs Meyers Iowa Pine. It makes the task so much more pleasant!

    1. Housewife Music? I'm curious about that! And your Iowa Pine scent sounds lovely. I know you do Young Living oils so I'm just wondering if you prefer that to the Thieves scent when cleaning? I love the fragrance of Thieves!

  7. Happy Anniversary - so wonderful - the thoughts you have about loving your new home after three years and all the things you love about it. By the way I would rather wash dishes than put them in a dishwasher and then unload them. Hope you have many more happy years of loving your home.

    1. Many times I've willed myself to think like that about washing dishes, Sandy. It never works!

  8. Sometimes, well for a retiree...most times what can languish over the simple things. I understand about little
traditions...those between you and yourself. Playing the records over is a wonderful way to end the holiday season. And Peace and Prosperity to you and yours as you enjoy your 'little Home'. I feel the same way! Sandi

  9. Isn't it one of life's greatest blessings to live in a house where you're actually happy and content? I am so glad you have that right now. I remember your post about the house in Florida and how unhappy you were there. We've been in our house almost 30 years and people ask us if we're going to stay here when Brian retires (in 5-1/2 years). My answer is, I don't know. A lot can happen by then.

I hate doing dishes; it's actually one of my most dreaded chores. I use the dishwasher for every possible little thing. I do have a window over my sink, but it faces the side of the neighbor's house. And he has nothing there on that side of the house - no bushes, no flowers. So all I see is a big blob of dark aluminum siding and the chipped up sidewalk leading to his front door. In the warmer months, there's a ton of weeds growing by his sidewalk. He calls it his Weed Garden. Yep, that's my view!

Enjoy the sunshine and your beautiful home.

    xoxo

    1. Melanie, I am so relieved that one other person is not crazy about washing dishes! But I do so wish that your own kitchen sink view offered something pretty to look at. Is there nothing that could screen it? I am so grateful that RH has worked hard to make a beautiful garden outside my window and of course there is the wonderful pond to the side, and always the sky. I should be ashamed for not enjoying dishwashing with all that beauty outside the window!

  10. hello dear Dewena. Happy Home Hill Anniversary!
to think those three years have flown by. it's wonderful that Home Hill is already in your bones! it's really a perfect size. and you have filled it with the warmth and charm the same as you did at Valley View. I especially love the fresh coziness of your bedroom and the kitchen! there is just something about having a kitchen window. my mother agreed. and we always felt lucky in our moves if we could have one with a window. I love the little figure there with the raccoon! AND the lovely green and white plate with an English scene of a snowy village shoppe. magical DSM! just magical. happy Cozy Winter to you and yours. xoxo

    1. Thank you, dear Tam! I know that you understand where I'm coming from, how much this sweet place means to me. I'm so glad you noticed the little racoon with the odd little figure, they're favorites of mine. And I think I'll keep the platter up in hopes of luring some snow our way. But believe it or not, yesterday all of a sudden, I am ready to start dismantling most of the Christmas decor. I surprised myself with that!
