Every Day in the Garden: January 11-24

I've always thought of March as fickle but this January is borrowing from her younger sister's fame. Bright and sunny one day, dreary icy cold the next, blustery clear, twice dustings of snow.

What to wear? What to do, stay home or go somewhere?

What have you been doing these January days? Have you been out and about or cocooning inside?

Here's the second part of my new Every Day in the Garden series, a way to get me outside for a few minutes each day even if once or twice my pajamas were underneath my coat.

[as far as I ventured one day; still loving
the little wreath on kitchen door]

                    [never made it outside at all on 22nd;
                     borrowed pic from 1/22/2019]

                          [RH's backyard project is coming
                            along nicely.]

  1. I love the little wreath too! and the brave rooster's wreath with the red berries.
I think this new habit is a good one. it's fresh air! and about plans and projects and LIFE! xoxoxo

    1. It does help, Tammy. You know me, I could so easily hole up inside for weeks at a time.

I guess I should take the wreath off our 🐓's neck but will wait a while. Maybe it helps keep him a little warmer?

  2. This series and all of the benefits is a perfectly wonderful way to blog, a reason to, and moreover-a reason to get some fresh air! Your photos are lovely. Who would think a cold winter could look so beautiful?

    1. Well, thank you, sweet Jane! But I am using a little HDR to brighten up dreary winter snapshots and for a little fun. Especially since we just aren't getting the beautiful snows that you do--but I'm praying for some!

    1. Thank you, Sandy! Mine are just mini-excursions compared to yours but it's rewarding to even be out a short time.

    2. absolutely - any time outside is wonderful even when I complain about snow when it seems to be white for a long time - i'm still outside getting photos!

  4. Lovely shots Dewena. The one with the birds on the tree branch looks eerily like a pic I took a few years ago.

This month has been busy...planning our next vacay, and Thursday I had my implant surgery. He did a tissue grafting so the recovery has been more involved, and to top it off my temporary tooth won’t fit now, but he never mentioned that would happen. How does he know I’m not a famous model and that I don’t have a photo shoot this week?? Don’t answer that. I will call him first thing in the morning, but in the meantime I’m a toothless wonder. 🙄

    1. Doreen, I'm so sorry that tooth has given you more trouble! And honey, you could certainly be a famous model--and definitely the mother of one. I hope you get your permanent one before the next trip. And let me know where that one will be when you get a chance.

The birds on the branch are crows. I'm so fascinated with them, they are beautiful and we have so many of them.

Isn't a group of them called a Murder of Crows?

  5. I've been doing a little bit of both (venturing out and cocooning). I stayed in all weekend and introverted, as I call it. Brian was working and I had no plans - which I didn't mind at all. It was heavenly to just stay home and get some things done, plus relax. This morning we are off and running! We are car shopping. It's not exciting for me like it is for some people. I find it annoying and stressful. Later this week I have yoga and an eye doctor appointment, plus there's always errands to run, so not a lot of cocooning this week for me.

Thank you for sharing your lovely garden and yard pictures.

    xoxo

    1. I didn't realize you were still car shopping. You have certainly been patient so I bet you'll end up with a good one. I hate car shopping too, so exhausting. But I do need to get out soon, for my own good. There is a shop in our little town that Doreen went to and loved when she and her husband were here last Christmas and I've been meaning to visit it ever since. I had hoped my sister would go with me but she is having to stay off her feet a lot after slipping walking her dog. Shopping is more fun with someone.

  6. How sweet and thoughtful of you, my friend, for braving chilly temps and bouts of snow for this wonderfully entertaining winter garden series.

So many lovely pics; my favourite picks are the 13th, 14th, and 24th. The first and last for the beautiful birdies (love cardinals!), and the second because it's just simply dreamy! I bet that blustery clarity kept you energized all day - I know wind blowing through my hair and brushing my cheeks definitely recharges my batteries!

    Keep 'em coming!

    1. I adore cardinals too, Poppy! They grab my heart. I think the one you said is dreamy is the one of our big sweet gum tree, or maybe it's a sour gum, we're not sure. But it is loaded this winter with little prickly balls, which will drop eventually and stick in our dachshunds paws. The granddaughters picked them up one time for a nickel apiece!

Any excuse to get them here for a visit!

  7. The weather here in January has been quite like yours - only with more than "dustings" of snow! I was just saying the other day that the dark days have been SO dark, with lights on at 4 pm, which I associate more with November. But then the sunny days are SO bright!

    1. I'm so jealous, Nan! Nothing but two dustings of the white stuff here. And I'm afraid it's getting too late for much hope of a big one.

      Enjoy it for me, please!
