To Sisters

I have all of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's journals--I must have read each one at least a dozen times over the years--and every book written about her that I could find, especially those written by her daughter Reeve. I think she was the most extraordinary woman of my lifetime, and my admiration for her knows no end. This paragraph is from her Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead and is from a letter to her younger sister Constance written in January of 1930.

"I want an open fire and a room full of flowers--spring flowers--against the gray windows

long window boxes of narcissus and daffodils
and a big flip jar of fresh white freesias on the table in the middle of the room.

And red tulips where the firelight will reflect in them.

And bookcases up to the ceiling and two large roomy desks and you at one of them,
and Daffin in front of the fire.

And for lunch (on a yellow tablecloth with mimosa in the center)--
and we would make it ourselves--
clear (canned) soup and a poached egg apiece,
and FRESH asparagus on toast,
and you would read me your latest story."

Lindbergh ends with this last sentence. May I claim it for my own to my three younger sisters, Deb, Teresa, and Jenn? We have poured out our hearts to each other this past week in emails, and I understand how Anne Morrow Lindbergh yearns for her sister and writes this:

"I love you and I miss you..."

  5. I have not read any of her books. The excerpts you posted are beautiful. I grew up wishing for a sister. Now I have 2 sister-in-laws and 2 step-sisters. I am especially close to one sister-in-law. Your photos are a beautiful accent to Anne's words!

  7. I love all that red in your picture! It's one of my favorite colors.

I have never read any of her books. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am posting a link to help you so that you can respond to comments via email, if you want, or so that people can respond to you. A lot of bloggers don't respond to comments if they can't do it by email. Of course, I don't know what blogs you read, lol!

I opened up a special hotmail account for my blog, so that I don't get it mixed up with my personal emails. You can do that too, if you want. Anyway, here's the tutorial: http://www.elirose.com/2011/03/no-reply-blogger/

  8. Dear sister, thank you so much for those sweet words, and the same words go back to you. We are so fortunate to have such a large, beautiful family that mom and dad started. I took EB and her dad to see mom on Sunday, how mom loved talking with her great granddaughter. She has such a way with the little ones. Will send a picture to you. Love you so much!

  10. Dewena, how lovely! I do not have sisters, but I have two daughters who I hope will be close once they get through the preteen and teen years. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and for always stopping by to visit. I apologize for being the slowest person on the earth to get around. I see I have missed so much here on your blog! I do just keep at it until something clicks, and now I'm really trying to do something unexpected. Funny you would notice the blue also, lol. I really liked that little bit of surprise:-)

  11. Dewena, Anne Morrow Lindberg is also one of my favorites. You introduced her to me. I love reading all of the details of her life. Sometimes the small things in a persons life are more interesting than the larger events. I'll never forget when she and her husband went shopping for a Tiara as she planned on wearing it to the parties they attended in London. Tiars were in fashion at that time They were successful after going to several stores, and as they were second hand, you had to wonder what the people were like who previously wore them.

    Great Reading!
