"Color-Mad"

"Color-Mad"

by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Something blue in every room;

Somewhere, a touch of red;

A bit of purple on a couch,

Or a pillow for my bed.

I had mauve draperies before--

My new ones shall be green.

I must have yellow on a chair,

Or on the fireside screen.

I'd love an orange breakfast nook,

Or a violet dining-room,

Or any color ever mixed

On any weaver's loom.

Not color-blind, but color-mad!

I cannot get my fill.

When I was young, I fell in love

With a rainbow on a hill!

by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

R.H. and I recently visited our granddaughter and watched her carefully take the crayons out of the crayon box, lay them on her little table, study them and then carefully select ones to put back in the box, over and over. With an artist for a mommie, I know she will always love color. Some day when she comes to visit Mimi's and Pawpaw's house she may beg me to let her change the colors in our house. But not yet. I'm safe for now with my color-mad choices.

  1. I loves the poem. I should have guessed that your house would have as colorful personality as you do. What bright colors. And that little granddaughter is adorable. I love the picture with her touching the cat's tail. Sweet!

    1. I don't know about the colorful personality, Peggy! Maybe my hidden inside, the me I wish was on the outside?

The granddaughter--yes, she is adorable, simply adorable!

  4. Custom made colour! You've done it, my friend; this lovely poem, as we say here in Greece, is, 'to your measurements'! Much like your petaled pillows, a patchwork of prints and colours, no doubt, these soft and pretty pieces emulate your own vibrant and multifaceted persona!

    Have a wonderful week!

    1. Thank you Marisa. Now you can understand why I simply loved reading about your yellow kitchen when I found your blog. I felt at home there and admired so much the passion you have for cooking your traditional family food in it.

    1. Thank you, Pat. Can you even imagine how much I hesitate to show my house of many colors when I see your beautiful rooms? Had to get my nerve up, I can promise you that.

She is a cutie pie! Thank you!

  8. OH MY DEAR ! ! !
yes! i'm yelling i guess! LOL.
how i loved this post. glimpses of the little house rescued and loved at valley view. every picture is beautiful.
when i moved into the wren house here . . . i had a total change of heart. i am still minimalist in my soul of souls. but i have to admit... i went berserk.
i became literally HUNGRY for coziness and comfort.
it looks like the bloomsbury artists invaded a little english country cottage!!! LOL.
i have my beloved blue and white china pieces and lamps and splashes of color in huge flower canvases on the pale yellow walls... and the white wicker... and dark wood table for this blasted wonderful computer... and this comment is TOO LONG!
but i just wish i could sit at that kitchen table and soak up your house!!! LOL!
and that wee precious moment is the icing on the cake. XOXO

    1. Thank you, Tammy dear! I would love to visit with you at my table too. We would talk so much that maybe you wouldn't mind all my clutter! I loved to read about you visiting the Marine's house and going through his "storage shed" out back and taking home some of the loved pieces of your past to sneak those pieces of blue and white china into your wren house. I know, you're a minimalist, but this not-so-minimalist loves to think of those cozy touches around you!

  9. What beautiful colors. I agree, you can't have to much. I have your blue oil painting of yellow roses in a dark blue vase with a light blue background that you gave me years ago. It brings me joy whenever I see it. It hangs right over the light on the table by my side of the bed. I can't thank you enough for it. Blue has always been my favorite color along with pink. I have to rein myself in when I want to wear those colors everyday. I stare at everything in your house when I visit just to absorb it all. Your an inspiration to me.

    1. Thank you, sweet sister! I had forgotten all about that painting. It is so strange, I only painted when I was pregnant, but 4 pregnancies meant I did turn out a few paintings!

I think people probably have too much to absorb when they visit our house but I hope they think it's fun.

Got to get together soon! Love to you and Fred!

  10. Oh, what color fun and color play! Thanks for the wonderful peek at your interior...always so much fun to see my blogging friends' interiors, revealing so much about themselves :) Because you're such a collector, you must constantly be at color play whenever you set the table. Eye candy. So inviting and loving.

I did so much color work in my design occupation that I now desire explorations of the white and light palette. But I have color stashes in my sewing room...brilliant contemporary patchwork crib quilts to sell at holiday fairs. Two worlds.

    1. Thank you, Becky! Like I said to Pat, above, it's beautifully composed and restrained homes like yours and hers, and others that I see on blogs, that make me hesitate to put my rooms in all their colors on this blog. But I too love to see where bloggers live as it does reveal ll the lovely differences between us and makes for an interesting world. As I've told you before, there is a part of me that yearns for what you blogged about in Abbey Style. And I'm loving your new blog.

Everybody, go visit Becky's new blog, Good Riddance. (On my blogroll.) You'll love her ideas!

  13. Oh, Dewena, I LOVE all your wonderful colors! I love color, too, and stick with just a few for a 'scheme.' Although I am partial to yellow.

    1. Thank you, Karen! As you can see, I love yellow too, although if it was not so much trouble to repaint after what I have being up for 9 years now, I would tame my choice down some. I am really feeling "pinks" now but husband, not so much!

    1. Thank you, Amy! So nice to have met you through Pat and her link to the house tours!

I know I'm thinking from a grandmother's perspective but it did seem to me that I was seeing future artistic talent in the way our granddaughter studied the colors of the crayons so intently!

  15. Dewena, the colors in your home are beautiful. I love that valance over your washer and dryer; that wonderful mirror on that beautiful red wall; and those chintz-looking drapes, just to mention a few. What a precious little girl, and I can just imagine you watching her study the crayons. So sweet. laurie

    1. Thank you Laurie! That valance was a Goodwill Disney label find that not only perfectly covered up the clutter on the open shelves behind it but fit in with the opposite side of the laundry room--our snack and microwave area--where large old lithos of Mickey and Minnie look down on us when we make toast or check for cookies in the cookie jar!

Yes, Laurie, I could sit for hours watching her play. She is so serious about it but ever once in a while flashes us that smile that lights up our world.

  16. Me too...I love color. Deep jewel tones are my favorite. And yellow..yellow reminds me of sunshine. And red...must have a touch in every room. And now you've got me thinking of a violet dining room!

    1. Wouldn't that be grand! A violet dining room! But yours is so pretty as it is, Betty and at least it's a dining room, separate from the kitchen. You can set the table early and not have people want to use it for drawing up estimates!

      Thanks, Betty!

  18. Dear Dewena,
I loved this post on color and especially the poem. Somehow my house is all shades of brown and orange ??? Maybe we are a little outdated. Something for us to think about. Your granddaughter is beautiful! But I love your colors, especially the laundry room!
